Old school rappers from the 90’s

Tredici Bacci’s latest record, La Fine Del Futuro, released this spring, makes me feel like I’m playing a minor character in a movie about falling in love on mushrooms in a European technicolor nightmare circus. And oh yes, it’s definitely set in the 1970s. Simon Hanes is this 13-piece soundtrack-pop ensemble’s fearless leader, as well as its composer and arranger. Flypaper’s Dre DiMura asked the California-raised Brooklyn-based musical polymath to speak about his sense of humor, which is integral to the music, and Hanes said something which I think encompasses a huge part of the ethos of this interview series:

You can see why turntablists like scratching “ahhhh” and “fressssshhhh” so much — they’re structureless slabs of tuned white noise, so they’re more forgiving. Scratching a rap a cappella is another story. The words have meanings, and the pitches have a musical context. When a word falls in the wrong spot or with the wrong emphasis, it sounds much worse than a wrong note in a jazz solo, and an untrained listener is more likely to notice it.

If we compare D Dorian to its parallel (and generally more familiar) mode (D natural minor and not D major!), we would notice the following difference:

This is one of my favorite tucked-away towns in the country. After stopping here on my way between Seattle and Vancouver, it’s easy to see why this would be a must-stop for touring musicians of all kinds. Although you might think its quaintness works against it, small-town Washington state has long harbored thriving bastions of DIY creativity since the 1970s. With a few local independent labels and a local music publication called What’s Up! Magazine, this tiny town is worth visiting, to make some great connections and play for an awesome crowd! Bonus trivia: It’s where Death Cab for Cutie originated from.

Whether used by accident or on purpose, it does tend to work. If you look closely at the melody of “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” by Fall Out Boy, you’ll notice it places the same amount of focus on those short scale intervals. The first vocal line even sounds like a nursery rhyme, with a see-saw-style melody: D-E-F#-E-D-E-F#-E-D.
