This is just a modern version of the previous one. This form, the Verse-Chorus, is pretty self-explanatory. Your verses should lead into a summarizing chorus that ties everything together. This is an extremely popular song structure right now, and has been for many years, and one that every songwriter should master.
I’m serious. No matter how cold it is, if you find a creek or a lake or a river (and it’s clean, of course,) jump into it. It’s good for your circulation and your immune system, and it feels like a reset.
You know that wretched feeling you get when it’s 3 AM and you still haven’t begun loading out from the venue, and you have to be up in three hours to make it to your next show in Sacramento?

Are you writing for millennials? A lot of millennials went through their rebellious phases when emo music was at its peak. With their brains changing and their hormones raging, the simple chord progressions and major tonalities of emo and pop punk have most likely been stamped into their subconscious as instant bookmarks of this phase of their life. Re-orchestrating a progression like vi-IV-I-V for non-guitar instruments will surely bring this audience back in subtle, emotive ways.
One of the more accessible composers on this list, Jennifer Higdon’s award winning music is characterized by an ability to appeal to a large audience and generally sits in a more diatonic, tonal setting. Her piece Blue Cathedral, which is one of today’s most frequently performed contemporary classical works in the United States, brought Higdon’s music to the world stage. Now with a real following, Higdon’s 2008 Violin Concerto gained her immediate international fame and subsequently won her the 2010 Pulitzer Prize in music. A self-taught flautist and self-professed newcomer to classical music, Higdon’s unconventional path to contemporary classical music makes it easy to recognize that she cites The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, and the Bluegrass music of her home state of Tennessee as major influences. Higdon’s music sounds profoundly and whole-heartedly American and at times echoes that of the great American composer Aaron Copland.
Mickey’s got a serious talent for writing relatable, bittersweet lyrics. You can rock out to his growing pain, while his bright guitar soothes. His live shows are pretty rare these days, so make an effort to catch him!
I do give students my opinions on their music, during our in-class, art-school-style critique sessions (and sometimes also as timed SoundCloud comments.) I consider this subjective group critique to be the actually valuable form of feedback. As a group, we listen to each person’s assignment and then talk about it. We try to figure out:

From her native Tunisia via France, Abdelwahed made her name playing sets in places like The Boiler Room and Berghain. Her work fuses gritty urban dance rhythms with unconventional textures; it’s ambient, industrial, and traditional Arab music all wrapped up within an experimental techno framework. In an interview she poses a question that summarizes her artistic vision: “If the people who invented house and techno were Arab, if they had grown up with our rhythms and our instruments, what would it sound like? Would it be the drum and bass, house and techno we know today? I don’t think so.” Abdelwahed’s latest album is Khonna, released in November 2018.
When I started building the harmony, the changes ended up coming together pretty quickly. I jumped on my Rhodes to lay down some pretty standard F minor related changes, using the last bar of the phrase to take it a bit outside. For the harmonically curious, those turnaround changes are G♭ Maj7, D♭ Maj7, C Min7, and E Maj7(♭5).
“I am very, very happy I found out about Soundfly. Tim was great. Polite, professional, and easy to reach. I have been making beats since 1999 but learned a lot from your course and from Tim.”
